Why pulsed matters

The difference between cleaning a beam and burning one.

A continuous-wave laser pours energy into a surface without stopping. On steel that is fine and it is fast. On wood, stone or a patinated bronze it is a heat gun with extra steps — the substrate soaks up the energy and scorches before the coating clears.

A pulsed fiber laser fires in nanosecond bursts with dead time between them. Energy goes into the contaminant faster than heat can conduct into the material underneath, and the gap lets the substrate shed what little it absorbed. That is why wood never reaches its roughly 200°C char point and why aircraft aluminium comes out under 120°C, unannealed and undistorted.

Four parameters get tuned independently — power, pulse frequency, pulse width and scan speed. Together they define the energy density landing on the surface, which is what actually determines whether you take off soot, or soot and the wood with it.

Where it came from

The FP-300 is built by FeatherPulse, assembled in Arkansas for aviation MRO work — paint removal, corrosion cleaning and surface prep on airframes and components. Same operator, same machine, pointed at different problems.

Proof, not adjectives

Every laser company on earth writes the words “gentle” and “non-destructive” on their website. This is what those words are supposed to mean.

Paper chars at roughly 230°C and has essentially no thermal mass. A process that worked by heating the surface would leave a hole. This one leaves the sheet.

A Class 4 laser is a serious instrument. Controlled access, wavelength-matched eyewear for everyone inside the perimeter, and extraction at the work face are not optional and are included in every job — not billed as an extra.
